Course Objective:

This course is an introduction to the background, contents, literary context, history and message of the first five books of the Bible. Its objectives include:
• Gaining knowledge of the primary biblical text and an awareness of competing interpretations in the secondary literature.

• Becoming aware of the nature and origin of the Pentateuch, and theological questions raised by the application of critical methods to these books.

• Learning basic principles of interpretation and applying them to this part of Scripture, and how to make valid application of them in contemporary society.

• Awareness of the significance of the Pentateuch for doctrinal, pastoral and moral questions.

• Exploration of some of their major theological themes.
